Views on Views

Within the ever expanding reach of the commercial image industry and the rise of right wing politics across the west, media that depicts an idealized interpretations of the past have become a tool of both commerce and control. There exist some striking thematic similarities within how each system seeks to attract and coerce a prospective consumer (ex. rurality, family, beauty, country, nostalgia). This series is compromised of photographs, video, and an installation that look to express and obscure the use of such language spread across a variety of subjects. Made in and around Lisbon, this body of work looks back at some of the remaining traces of the world expo 40 held during the Estate Novo as well as found objects and street scenes reminiscent of another time. What comes forth is not an answer but a type of image formulated out of a set of misplaced familiarities drawn from history and contemporary life.
